*Agoraphobia, a fear of open places. The term originates from the greek word "agora", marketplace. Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by anxiety in situations where the sufferer perceives the environment as being difficult to escape or get help. These situations include, but are not limited to, wide-open spaces. Agoraphobia is defined within the DSM-IV TR as a subset of panic disorder, involving the fear of incurring a panic attack in those environments. The sufferer may go to great lengths to avoid those situations, in severe cases becoming unable to leave their home or safe haven.
Video work Agoraphobia was shot using Google Earth –street view. In the video a wanderer is trying to navigate their way across the square, but after few "steps" towards the center of the square the program throws the walker back. The wanderer proceeds to "walk" around the square trying to get across never manageing to succeed.
In this work I´m using a technical flaw / feature of Google Earth Street View, that makes "walking around" in open areas impossible. Street view is precisely created for street navigation and cannot be used in any other way. The squares and other open places are not coded in the program at all, terefore walkig across the square is not possible. Cursor movements and other graphic signs of navigation are essential part of the video.

*Agorafobia eli avaran paikan kammo, aukio- tai torikammo on ahdistuneisuushäiriö, josta kärsivä ihminen pelkää avaria paikkoja. Sana tulee kreikan ’toria’ tarkoittavasta sanasta agora, minkä vuoksi siitä käytetään myös nimitystä ’torikammo’. Agorafoobikot ahdistuvat paikassa tai tilanteessa, josta ei helposti pääse turvaan. Fobialle on tyypillistä, että ahdistavia tilanteita pyritään mahdollisuuksien mukaan välttämään. Usein agorafobia liitetään julkisten paikkojen, kuten torien tai ihmismassojen pelkoon. Osa agorafoobikoista pelkää tyhjiä ja avaria paikkoja, kuten taivasta, merenselkää, tyhjiä saleja tai erilaisia kenttiä. Kyseiseen pelkoon vaikuttaa voimakas tunne kiintopisteen kadottamisesta. Henkilöllä saattaa esiintyä esimerkiksi tunne taivaan “aavaan” putoamisesta.
Videoteos AGORAFOBIA on kuvattu Google earth –street view:n kautta. Videossa yritetään navigoida pääsyä Lahden torille, mutta aina kun kadulta on päästy muutama askel aukealle torille päin ohjelma heittää kulkijan takaisin kadulle. Kulkija kiertää kesäistä Lahden toria ja yrittäen ylittää aukiota useita kertoja torin eri laidoilta ja kulmista, koskaan siinä kuitenkaan onnistumatta.
Teoksessa käytän hyväkseni Googlen street view katunavigointi-ohjelman teknistä puutetta/ominaisuutta, joka tekee aukioilla liikkumisen mahdottomaksi. Street view on luotu nimenomaan katunavigointiin eikä siihen ole ilmeisesti koodattu aukeita paikkoja ollenkaan, joten vaeltelu torilla ja aukioilla on mahdotonta. Kursorin liikkeet ja muut navigoinnin graafiset ilmentymät (nuolet, ympyrät, neliöt) ovat olennainen osa teosta.
